FADO

Fado is a Portuguese music style of Lisbon's popular origin, mainly from Alfama and Mouraria neighbourhoods.

It ́s origins have been attributed to many cultural influences, from the African music to Arabian presence.

The precise origin of this urban song is still unknown, but surely a result of the mixed cultures that have crossed the city.

Fado became popular in Lisbon around 1840 onwards, the singers and musicians bringing it to life. Being an oral tradition, it evolved enriching both melodic and rhythmically. In the XX century the popular poetry was followed by increasingly elaborate poems, becoming ever more literate and artistic.

From 1930 and 1940 the radio, the theatre and the cinema projected this art form to the general public  in Portugal and in 1950`s all over the world.

In 2011, Fado was recognised by UNESCO as an, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

ABOUT ME

I am 42 years old, Portuguese and I am passionate about Fado. From a young age that this genre interested me by its diversity, intensity and was fascinated by the mystery that surrounds it. For something that actually even not knowing, we feel so deeply.

Being able to share my feelings for Fado and its meaning is a great fulfilment for me.

I love traveling and experiencing different cultures, its history and tradition. Also I'm interested in various art forms and some of them are genuinely Portuguese.

There is no doubt that despite its popular origins, Fado is, as declared, a great Art.
